The 2010 SET event will take place on the ARRL's recommended date of the first weekend of October.  Specifically, Saturday, October 2, for the ARRL section-wide Simulated Emergency Test.  The scenario will be a massive ice storm which coats all of Illinois with approximately six inches of ice over the course of a 24-hour period beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, October 1. This event will follow the timeline of the actual events of January, 2009, across the state of Kentucky.  Kentucky's EMA Director, Brig. Gen. John Heltzel, refers to the event as the ‘Ice Quake.’ We'll use that same moniker for this one. No above-ground infrastructure will be operational--no AC mains, no landlines, no Internet, no satellite connections, no passable roads, etc.
As in last year’s SET, we will need net control stations, field stations with mobile or handheld radios, and at least one station with HF capability and the ability to communicate with the net control station by VHF radio. We hope to use some APRS in the field.
