Sunspots and Propagation |
Our July 26 program for the Evanston Amateur Radio Community will be on sunspots and propagation. Our special guest presenter will be K9OR, Randy Brothers. Randy was first licensed in Ohio in 1962 (a sunspot minimum), active through 1966 – then inactive through college and the 70’s (missed the 1969 peak). Randy caught the down-swing of the 1980 peak, being active from 1981 to 1986, then inactive through the next peak of 1991, but managed to get back on air in 2001, to enjoy real sunspot activity for the first time. He states, “Since I missed several peaks, I’m determined not to let any more go by.” Randy’s presentation will be on sunspots, what they are, and how they and other solar happenings affect radio propagation. The 11-year cycle is still somewhat of a mystery, but he will cover the latest theories. Join us on Monday, July 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fire Department Training Room, 909 Lake Street. You may park across the street so long as you sign the sheet listing your car as an authorized parker when you enter the meeting room. |

Net Frequency Change |
The EARC and a group of hams in Marengo, IL have both been been using 147.435 Mhz for about the same length of time, however it appears that our group has been causing some interference with that group. To ensure that he does not cause conflict/bad feelings, W8UFO has moved EchoLink node to 147.405Mhz. Various hams have listened to that frequency for a few days and found very little activity. Since our net uses the EchoLink node, we will move our net to that frequency. Signal reports are welcome, and if we interfere with your use of the frequency please contact us. |

Training is Ongoing |
Learning is a lifelong pursuit, and as one of its consitutional goals, the Evanston Amateur Radio Community is here to help. We've added a Training Center to the website in the hopes that it gives you a starting point and a path to your ham radio learning. It contains courses recommended by our technical director, Scott Irwin (W8UFO) and those required by the City of Evanston in order to assist in an emergency. Please let us know what you think! |

Choosing A Ham Radio |
(From The ARRL Website) The most common question asked by new radio amateurs is "Now that I have my license, what kind of radio should I get?" The ARRL, in an attempt to help newcomers to Amateur Radio answer that very question, has added a bonus supplement to the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual. "Choosing a Ham Radio: Your Guide to Selecting the Right Equipment" is aimed at the new Technician licensee ready to acquire a first radio, a licensee recently upgraded to General class and wanting to explore HF or someone getting back into Amateur Radio after a period of inactivity. |
